Is There More To Sarah Palin?

Deep down inside I was praying for a Margaret Thatcher mind to come out of the Palin body. Who knows, maybe its still there looking for a way to get out but I doubt we’ll ever get a chance to hear it. The media has succeeded in destroying her national political future by dumbing her down to the level of a small town hick. This process has been nothing short of repugnant, sadistic, and patently unfair not only to her, but to democracy in general.

I think there may be more than a pretty face but we just can’t seem to get to it. At least not yet and certainly not in terms of vice presidential tools; this is not what I had hoped for. That’s not to say that Joe Biden has been such a gleaming example. As the most experienced of the pair, you would think the senator would be able to pull his foot out of his mouth long enough to make a sound bite that helps his cause. So much for his years of political experience. (Note to Barrack: put this pol on a short leash and don’t give him a microphone)

I really had hopes for Gov. Palin. Surely in light of Hillary being ignored by Barack, she was an expedient choice. But I liked her because it appeared that she was authentic, conservative, had some energy, and wasn’t embarrassed about her ‘guy next door’ background and commensurate resume. I’m truly fed up with the D.C. smart guy mentality. I was promised that I would like her even more as I got to know her. So I waited, and waited some more for her mind to unfold. It hasn’t and I haven’t in spite of the promise.

Today’s frontal assault by CNN was appalling. This process has been nothing short of repugnant, sadistic, and patently unfair not only to her, but to democracy in general. She has become the female version of Dan Quayle. I’m quite sure the only reason they haven’t gone after McCain in the same vein is because of his jail time in N. Viet Nam. That would be too transparent however it provides a level of journalistic malfeasance they can aspire to in the 2012 campaign when Bobby Jindal arrives on the national scene. Lest I digress…

But they weren’t alone in this travesty. McCain’s handlers and Sarah herself need to shoulder some of the blame for how this has turned out. The Katie Couric interview was a debacle because it showed a sense of politicomedia naiveté, not in terms of calculating the depth of Katie’s bias and comportment but in terms of what would happen in the editing room after she was done her work. Hasn’t anyone on the McCain team ever watched 60 Minutes to see how this has become an art form. After all, they’re just down the hall from Katie’s office at CBS. Alas, Palin’s confused answers to foreign and economic issues revealed a programmed robot that felt the need to spout programmed talking points; unfortunately, every last one of them… on every subject.

Maybe my expectations were just too lofty or possibly Sarah simply doesn’t have the goods I hoped she did.

Peggy Noonan hit the nail on the head when she wrote a piece titled Palin’s Failin’ in the Wall Street Journal, 17 October 2008.:

She doesn’t think aloud. She just . . . says things….. She is not as thoughtful or persuasive as Joe the Plumber, who in an extended cable interview Thursday made a better case for the Republican ticket than the Republican ticket has made.

….She could reinspire and reinspirit; she chooses merely

 to excite.

She doesn’t seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts…..What is it she stands for? After seven weeks, we don’t know.

I still believe that there is more to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin than we have seen. Was it the right choice for John McCain? Since the meltdown at the corner of Wall and Market Streets one would have to say probably not. Had the choice been made three weeks later, I doubt that Sarah would currently be campaigning in the lower 48 and that Mitt Romney would be playing golf right now.
