The End Does Not Justify the Means

They display their audacity by thumbing their political noses at not only theedge of the cliff Constitution and the legislative process, but their constituents as well. As President Obama stated in a recently televised interview he …“ doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about what the procedural rules are in the House or Senate” The problem is Mr. President, the American people are spending a lot of time thinking about the procedural rules because that process is our protection, our check and balance, against a government that becomes blinded by its ideology.

What we are witnessing in D.C. these days is somewhat akin to the 1978 Jim Jones massacre in Guyana. To be sure, nobody is going to die from cyanide poisoning however there are a whole lot of politicians that will end up as former senators and congressmen with purple tongues as a result of their insanity.

In the end, their leader(s) will pay the price as well. Because of their chicanery and manipulation all three political leaders will subsequently lose their jobs. In November Harry Reid will become one of us, just another citizen. As his approval numbers  continue to tank, Barack Obama will become the Jimmy Carter of the new millennium and possibly won’t even be on the ballot in 2012. (keep an eye on HRC) And then there’s Nancy Pelosi – well she’s a different story. She will continue her work in Congress because the voters in her district in California are as crazy as she is. With that said, she will lose her position as Speaker of the House for one of two reasons; 1. her party loses their majority in November whereupon she is unceremoniously evicted from the House throne when she becomes a member of the minority or, 2. she will lose via a vote of her House Democrat peers that realize she led their party and former House colleagues like sheep to the slaughter.

What we are witnessing on the domestic political front is unprecedented in terms of the blatant disregard the President and his congressional leaders have for the overwhelming disapproval Americans have for their polarizing health care bill in its current form. This is compounded by the partisan political secrecy and manipulation that is taking place in order to enact this massive legislation. They display their audacity by thumbing their political noses at not only the Constitution and the legislative process, but their constituents as well. This legislative act has become a drug and they will do whatever it takes to get their fix. As President Obama stated in a recently televised interview “ he doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about what the procedural rules are in the House or Senate” The problem is Mr. President, the American people are having to spend a lot of time thinking about the procedural rules because the process is our protection, our check and balance, against a government that becomes blinded by its ideology.

Each day seems to create a new option for how the majority party will ram this flawed, unpopular, unscored, and as yet unpublished piece of legislation through to President Obama’s desk for his immediate signature and enactment into law. Reconciliation, the Slaughter Solution or Pass and Deem are just the latest bullets in the chamber if the bribery and arm twisting behind closed doors doesn’t work . New tactics have to replace process because the bill is so onerous, expensive, and intrusive that cowardly Democrat politicians know their political lives evaporate if their fingerprints are on it.

The Congressional Budget Office is tasked with figuring out how much things will cost that Congress proposes. They do a pretty good job of it when they get accurate baseline information. The problem is they can only use the data, rules, and restrictions they are given by the respective congressional committees. Trash in; trash out. Case in point, when you hear that health care reform legislation will reduce the deficit over 10 years one would be wise to ask the question; “what happens in the second ten years”? The answer to that question presents a much different and infinitely more onerous picture of their work.

Long gone is any sense of transparency, bipartisanship, and balance; nor does there seem to be any fear of the consequences that will befall politicians that are hell bent on hitching their wagon to an obsessed ideologue such as Obama.

The BasicMan fears that the current ruling class has done irreparable harm to the institution of government that has served this country so well for 223 years. Our elected representatives operate under an unspoken veil of trust bequeathed to them by the voters. When they act in such a way as to abrogate that trust, the institution suffers harm and eventually becomes dysfunctional. Their ongoing shenanigans may have taken us to the point that no matter what they promise, the end does not justify the means.

  1. Deem-and-pass has been used over two hundred times. I don’t see what the problem is.
And estimating anything in the economy after ten years is just a bunch of worthless statistics.
